The mid-back muscles are essential for overall-health and your running posture.
If you want to train your mid-back, you need to incorporate a series of strengthening exercises. Just running around is not enough.
Your mid-back muscles are postural muscles, so they respond well to lower weight (and higher repetitions) or to body-weight-exercises.
You can perform back extensions, Superman exercises or caterpillar movements.
You can also use a slingtrainer for the superman exercises.
If you want to train with (low) weights and you are familiar with squats you can do deadlifts and after this you can do kettlebell swings.
